Using the preset zoom options usually results in optimal picture quality, as these settings correspond to the specific zoom levels of various camera components, including the highest-resolution cropped zooms. For instance, smartphones with high-resolution 1x cameras can capture 2x cropped images at a lossless resolution.
The OnePlus 13, for example, features a 3x 50MP camera while also allowing users to take quality 6x cropped shots, which is why it includes a 6x preset in its camera application. On the flip side, manually adjusting the zoom via a slider or pinch gesture provides significant flexibility, letting users frame their shots precisely as they envision.
If a camera offers only 2x and 5x preset options, you might feel the need to zoom to an intermediate level, such as 3x or 4x. While these in-between zoom levels might not deliver the same image quality as the presets, the trade-off can be well worth it for some users seeking specific compositions.
Interestingly, certain devices like the Pixel 9 Pro lack a dedicated 10x zoom button, even though its 5x camera is capable of capturing decent 10x cropped images. This might prompt users to forgo preset options when attempting to achieve that elusive 10x shot.
