Samsung may be planning significant changes to the S Pen with its upcoming Galaxy S26 Ultra, moving away from the traditional stylus design. Recent reports suggest that alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung could implement active S Pen tracking technology for the S26 Ultra as well.
Although using this new approach may result in a thicker stylus, it could also enable support for Qi2 magnetic charging. For years, companies have evolved smartphones from their PDA roots, yet many have retained the stylus feature, with Samsung being a dominant player despite retiring the Galaxy Note series.
The S Pen, once a hallmark of Samsung’s flagship devices, is now facing a critical transformation. Rumors indicate that Samsung is considering retracting the traditional digitizer layer that has allowed the S Pen to function with a passive stylus.
Instead, sources, including leaker PandaFlash, suggest that the S26 Ultra may adopt a powered stylus similar to that of the Galaxy Z Fold 7. This means the S Pen would need to be stored separately, rather than housed in the device itself, which could affect its convenience.
Additionally, if Samsung removes the digitizer, it could lead to a reduction in the phone’s thickness. This shift may pave the way for incorporating a magnetic ring that facilitates Qi2 wireless charging directly into the device, eliminating the need for third-party accessories.
However, concerns about magnetic interference with the S Pen still linger. While these developments remain speculative, anticipation builds for the Galaxy S26 Ultra and its potential enhancements, especially in light of the expected new chipset.
