Currently, the Pixel Watch allows users to keep their phones unlocked as long as the smartwatch is nearby and unlocked.
However, there has not been a feature that locks the phone when the watch is out of range. Google is reportedly developing an option called “lock on disconnect” that aims to address this gap. While preventing phone theft ultimately relies on various factors, ensuring your device is locked plays a crucial role in safeguarding it.
Android already offers features like Theft Detection Lock, utilizing sensors to detect when your phone is snatched away, switching to a lockable state. The forthcoming auto-lock feature represents another step toward bolstering mobile security. According to an APK teardown, hints of the lock on disconnect feature have been found in version 3.5.0.758720535 of the Pixel Watch app.
This feature would lock the phone automatically when the connection with the Pixel Watch is lost. Although it has not yet been activated, glimpses of the settings menu suggest where this control will eventually appear. While the need for this feature may be minimal for some, many Pixel Watch users might appreciate the added security it offers.
The peace of mind that comes with knowing your phone will lock when it’s left behind could be beneficial, especially for those who tend to have longer screen timeout settings. Android Authority will keep users updated on the progress of this potential feature.
