Google is planning a minor update to the Gemini interface on Android, which may streamline the compose box by introducing a new “Tools” button. Currently, users have access to shortcuts for features like Gemini’s Canvas, Video, and Deep Research tools, located next to the microphone and Gemini Live buttons.
The expected change will consolidate these shortcuts into a single button, creating a cleaner look for the interface. This modification was discovered through a beta release of the Google app, allowing an early glimpse into the redesign.
An APK teardown reveals that while these features are being predicted based on ongoing code development, there is always a possibility that they may not be included in the final public version. In the current setup, users can see two tool shortcuts permanently alongside the microphone, while the third is accessible through a three-dot button.
With the new update, tapping the “Tools” button would bring up a pop-up window containing all three tools. Once a tool is selected, a chip will appear in the compose box to indicate which feature is in use.
Users can easily switch off the tool by clicking the “x” on the chip. Although this change is minor, it promises to reduce the visual clutter of the compose box, making it more user-friendly.
As of now, this update has not been deployed for users, but Google may include it in a future release. Updates will be provided once the feature becomes widely accessible.
