Samsung has officially announced a significant enhancement for its upcoming flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S25 Edge. The device is set to launch next week on May 12, and one of its standout features will be the introduction of “Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2.”
This innovative display protection is developed in collaboration with Corning, marking a notable advancement in the material used for safeguarding smartphone screens. Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 incorporates embedded crystals within a glass matrix, which boosts both toughness and resistance to cracking while ensuring clear visuals.
This new material is engineered specifically for ultra-thin devices like the Galaxy S25 Edge, further establishing Samsung’s commitment to cutting-edge design and technology. Prior to this announcement, Corning had revealed the protective qualities of Gorilla Glass Ceramic in March.
The glass is reported to withstand ten falls from a meter onto hard surfaces such as asphalt, demonstrating its durability. However, details regarding whether Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 enhances strength beyond its predecessor or if it is merely a revamped version optimized for slim devices are still unclear.
Kwangjin Bae, Executive Vice President and Head of Mechanical R&D at Samsung’s MX division, stated that the Galaxy S25 Edge aims to set a new benchmark for craftsmanship and performance. He emphasized the importance of developing a display material that is not only thin but also robust to support the phone’s cutting-edge design.
Andrew Beck, VP and GM of Corning Gorilla Glass, reiterated the innovative aspects of Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, noting its exceptional combination of thinness and strength. With these advancements, Samsung aims to solidify its position in the market by marrying premium design with unparalleled durability in its mobile devices.
