Spotify has recently submitted an important update for its iOS app, set to enhance the experience for millions of American users. This change comes as a result of a federal court ruling that mandates Apple to ease its App Store restrictions.
With this update, Spotify users on iPhones and iPads will gain greater flexibility in managing their subscriptions. The new features will allow users to view subscription prices, access promotions, and purchase Premium plans directly from the app.
By clicking on a link within the app, users can navigate to Spotify’s website, where a variety of payment methods are available beyond Apple’s payment system. Previously, these functionalities were obstructed due to Apple’s regulations.
According to Bloomberg, Spotify has over 55 million subscribers in the U.S., many of whom are iOS users who have faced limitations due to Apple’s tight control over billing processes. Following the court’s ruling, which identified Apple as being in “willful violation” of an injunction, Spotify promptly acted by submitting this app update to enable better access and transparency for American consumers.
In a public statement, Spotify emphasized the significance of this change, noting that U.S. consumers will now have clear pricing information and promotional details directly within the app. This update mirrors policies that the company implemented for Android users in 2022, allowing them to choose between Google Play billing and direct subscriptions via Spotify’s website.
Additionally, Spotify hinted at future opportunities for both creators and listeners, mentioning that this update could pave the way for more seamless purchasing options that would benefit content creators. The company also cited potential enhancements in audiobook purchases as an example of forthcoming features if the app update receives approval from Apple.
