Pixel Watch 2 and 3 Become Smarter: Compatibility with the Right Phone is Key

Google has recently announced an out-of-schedule update for the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3, introducing a feature that was previously exclusive to the Pixel 9 series. This update adds Scam Detection support, allowing users to receive alerts about potential scam calls while on the go.

For those using a Pixel Watch paired with a Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, or 9 Pro Fold, notifications for scam calls can now be received directly on the watch. The Scam Detection feature utilizes AI to analyze conversation patterns in real time, flagging potentially suspicious calls.

When enabled on a paired Pixel 9, the feature will notify users through vibrations, sounds, and a visible alert, allowing them to decide whether to dismiss the warning or end the call directly from their wrist. However, it is important to note that this feature is currently limited to users in the United States and only works for calls in English.

Additionally, the watch must remain within Bluetooth range of the Pixel 9, as LTE connectivity will not trigger scam alerts if the phone is out of range. To activate Scam Detection on your Pixel 9, open the Phone app, tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner, navigate to Settings, and toggle on Scam Detection.

Once activated, the feature will run in the background during calls, emitting an audible beep when monitoring for suspicious activity. Along with the Scam Detection feature, Google is rolling out a minor update for all Pixel Watch models, identified by version number BP1A.250305.019.W7, which includes several bug fixes.

To check for this update, users can go to Settings > System > System updates on their Pixel Watch. Google has announced that subsequent updates will follow quarterly, with the next one expected in June.
