Google TV Remotes Set to Feature ‘Free TV’ Button in Exciting New Update – Android Authority

Google has announced that all new Google TV remotes will feature a button labeled “Free TV” or “Live TV” starting this month. This addition is designed to improve user access to over 150 free TV channels available through Google TV FreePlay. Currently, some devices, such as the Onn 4K Pro from Walmart, already have this dedicated button, which opens the Live tab for easy access to live broadcasts.

The Google TV platform offers an extensive array of streaming services, ensuring a diverse selection of content. In early 2023, Google enhanced the user experience by rolling out a “Live” tab that provides access to a variety of ad-supported television channels like BBC Earth, Court TV, and Hallmark Movies. This library allows users to enjoy live TV without the need for additional apps or subscription fees.

Previously released devices, such as the Onn 4K Pro, included a large “Free TV” button, though not all Google TV products received this update. Critics noted the oversized button as unnecessary for many users, especially considering that customizing remote functions required additional tools. As of April 2025, all new Google TV devices will include the “Free TV” or “Live TV” button, following a directive from Google to its manufacturing partners.

A company spokesperson commented on the positive reception of Google TV FreePlay, highlighting the button’s role in providing users with a consistent and convenient experience. For regions without the FreePlay feature, the button will serve as a shortcut to live guides, preventing it from being rendered ineffective outside the U.S. Although there are no specific details regarding the size or placement of the new button, manufacturers will continue to have the flexibility to customize their remotes while incorporating this standard feature.
