Google Messages is currently facing a frustrating bug in its latest beta version (v20250406) that prompts users to react with emojis to image messages automatically. This unwanted behavior occurs specifically when the last message received in a chat is an image, leading to a series of complaints from users on Reddit. The issue does not appear in older, stable releases of the app, making it clear that this is a beta-related problem. The bug makes it easy for users to accidentally send emoji reactions when they don’t intend to, particularly if they frequently enter and exit conversations containing images.
Though this automatic prompt does not completely disrupt the messaging experience, it introduces an additional step for users who need to close the emoji panel to send a text. As a workaround, users can send or receive a text message immediately after receiving an image to avoid the emoji reaction prompt, though this fix is only temporary. If another image message is received, the issue will resurface. While some users are battling this annoying bug, Android Police has confirmed that the problem arises primarily in the beta version, and thus, reverting to an earlier stable version could be a more effective solution for those affected.
As beta testing often comes with unpredictable issues, it is advisable for users to consider this when opting into beta channels. Have you encountered this persistent emoji reaction popup in Google Messages? If so, we invite you to share your experiences and the version of the app you’re using in the comments.
