Apple Maps has made a significant stride by becoming accessible on Android phones through a web interface. While the service was previously available for desktop users, the recent compatibility with Chrome on Android marks a notable advancement in breaking down platform barriers.
However, users should temper their expectations as the mobile experience is still in its developmental stages. The web version of Apple Maps began beta testing a year ago, allowing PC users to access its features.
Previously, Android users were unable to utilize the service due to its incompatibility with mobile browsers like Chrome. Recent reports indicate that Apple has now dropped the “beta” label from its URL, although remnants of beta features still linger in the interface.
Despite this progress, Apple’s mapping solution on mobile devices is still somewhat lacking compared to its desktop counterpart. Notably absent is the Look Around feature, which serves as Apple’s version of Google’s Street View.
Additionally, users may find navigation to be less intuitive, making it unlikely that many will switch from Google Maps for everyday navigation needs in the immediate future. Nonetheless, the improvements do present an opportunity for Android users to explore and discover features unique to Apple Maps.
Apple Maps showcases impressive functionalities, especially on desktop, and it will be interesting to see if some of these features, like Look Around, eventually transition to the mobile platform. For now, having Apple Maps available on Android offers fresh options for users who seek alternatives in mapping services.
