Google Drive is gearing up to enhance its functionality on Android with upcoming features that may significantly speed up document decoding. According to recent findings from an APK teardown, Drive is expected to integrate Gemini-based PDF summary capabilities, mimicking the features already available on its web version. Users will soon be able to quickly access PDF summaries directly within the PDF viewer through an easy-to-find three-dot menu or header icon.
In the past few months, Google Drive has rolled out several Gemini-related features, primarily debuting them on its web platform before bringing them to Android. The new feature will allow users to summarize content from multiple files simultaneously, making it easier to compile important information from various documents, including both Docs and PDFs. The Android version of Google Drive, specifically version 2.25.250, includes the code for these PDF summarization functionalities.
This means that users will likely be able to summarize PDFs stored in their Google Drive or shared via Google Drive without needing to leave the PDF viewer. They can simply click on the three-dot icon and select the “Summarize this file” option or tap the Gemini icon to type their summary request. However, this feature may not work with offline PDFs, so it’s best to ensure the documents are stored in Drive.
While these new PDF summaries won’t be displayed automatically like they are on the web, users will have the capability to manually initiate a summary when needed. Furthermore, Google Drive is also exploring the ability to summarize entire folders, with plans for users to select multiple files and folders easily. This streamlined process aims to enhance efficiency for users dealing with a plethora of documents.
