Rumors surrounding Apple’s upcoming AirTag 2 indicate it will feature improved battery management alerts that could significantly enhance user experience. Currently, many Android-compatible trackers only provide vague low-battery warnings. In contrast, the AirTag 2 is expected to introduce two distinct alerts: one for low battery and another for very low battery. This seemingly minor upgrade addresses a considerable issue faced by users—trackers that fail unexpectedly because users weren’t aware of the battery status.
The existing single alert on many Android trackers can lead to confusion. With that single warning, users may feel they have ample time to replace the battery, only to forget it entirely. A two-stage warning system would serve as a more effective reminder and could prevent users from being caught off guard at critical moments when they need their tracker most. While Apple has not officially confirmed these developments, they were reported by 9to5Mac, which claims to have sourced information from internal communications.
The report also mentions that enhancements such as anti-tampering measures and the incorporation of Apple’s latest ultra-wideband chip are in the works, indicating a more thoughtful redesign of the AirTag experience. Support for the new AirTag features is already included in iOS 18.6, implying that users won’t need to upgrade to a future version of iOS to utilize these functions. Apple is anticipated to reveal the AirTag 2 during its fall event, possibly along with the next iPhone. If these upgrades are indeed implemented, it may prompt Android tracker brands, like Chipolo and Motorola, to reevaluate their product features.
