One UI 8 May Enhance Screenshots with HDR Feature Absent in Previous Betas – Android Authority

Samsung’s One UI 8 may soon enhance screenshots with HDR support, a feature that was previously absent in the closed beta releases. The latest beta release, ZYF7, indicates that Samsung is actively testing this functionality. The implementation of HDR screenshots is likely tied to Android 16’s embedded gain maps, designed to reflect true HDR imagery when displayed correctly.

As it stands, HDR screenshots are not part of the One UI 8 Beta 2 release, though there’s hope they will be included in upcoming open betas or the stable version. One UI 8 will introduce Android 16 to Samsung devices, starting with the Galaxy S25 series, currently in the second beta stage. Samsung runs an internal testing track alongside the open beta, which has revealed potential HDR screenshot support.

With Android 16, Google rolled out true HDR screenshot capability, enabling screenshots of HDR content to be saved in HDR format as PNG files, complete with embedded gain maps. These maps enhance how HDR effects are displayed on compatible devices while appearing in standard SDR format on others. Leaker Ice Universe shared insights, stating that the ZYF7 closed beta version, which is exclusive and not part of the public beta, includes HDR screenshot functionality.

After taking a screenshot of an HDR photo from social media on their Galaxy S25 Ultra, the shared image retained its HDR characteristics, showcasing the feature’s effectiveness. Although there are promising indications that HDR screenshot support will feature in future releases, uncertainty remains. We hope that users will see this functionality in the final stable One UI 8 rollout, expected alongside Samsung’s next-generation foldable devices in the near future.
