Gemini has made significant strides in enhancing the Google Drive experience by providing automatic summaries for PDF files. This new feature allows users to receive instant summaries of their PDFs, making it easier than ever to glean essential information quickly.
With the latest update, when users open a PDF in Google Drive, a summary card appears, showcasing key points from the document. This feature is designed to streamline workflow by including clickable actions such as “Draft a sample proposal” or “List interview questions based on this resume.”
By selecting these options, users can directly launch Gemini in a side panel, allowing them to tackle tasks without navigating away from the document. This is not Google’s first attempt to integrate Gemini with PDF functionalities; previous iterations included basic overviews.
However, the introduction of these actionable AI suggestions and the revamped card layout represents a significant improvement. Users can easily double-click any PDF to view the summary card, which is conveniently displayed in the overlay preview window rather than opening in a separate tab.
Gemini has been incorporated into various Google applications, from summarizing reports in Docs to drafting emails in Gmail. However, the PDF summarization feature in Drive holds particular promise for increasing productivity across the board.
For those who prefer traditional methods, the AI summaries are optional. Users can revert to their previous settings, allowing PDFs to open in a separate browser tab if desired.
The new feature is available in over 20 languages at launch and is accessible to Google Workspace customers on specific plans, as well as users with particular add-ons.
