Users Report Overreactions with Android 15’s Theft Detection Lock Feature, According to Android Authority

Android 15’s Theft Detection Lock feature has recently been criticized for overreacting, locking users out of their devices unexpectedly. This function, designed to enhance security, is intended to automatically lock the phone if it detects a forceful theft. By utilizing artificial intelligence and various parameters, the system responds when a device is taken away from its owner, triggers a lock when the device goes offline or experiences sudden movements, such as during a theft. However, users have taken to platforms like Reddit to report that the feature appears to be overly sensitive.

Many have experienced unwarranted locking scenarios while simply going about their daily activities. One user recounted an incident where their phone locked while they were leaving work, while another mentioned being locked out during a bus ride. A jogger also shared their surprise at receiving a theft notification mid-run, illustrating the frustrating experience of unexpected lockouts. The underlying technology of the Theft Detection Lock primarily relies on a phone’s accelerometer to detect sudden movements.

Early testing at Android Authority required intentional simulation of theft attempts to trigger the lock. This has led to speculation that the sensitivity of the detection algorithm may have been unintentionally increased since the initial rollout. While the concept of enhanced security is appreciated, the frequency of false alarms could deter users from relying on the feature. Although most users seem to remain tolerant of these glitches, there is a clear need for Google to refine the Theft Detection Lock to enhance its reliability.

Users are left hoping for updates that can better balance security with user experience.
