ChatGPT has rapidly gained popularity as a study, writing, and research tool among students. To enhance accessibility, OpenAI is providing a complimentary two-month subscription to ChatGPT Plus for eligible college students in the United States and Canada. This initiative is particularly timely, coinciding with the final months of the academic year. The promotion, which was revealed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, began on March 31 and will run until May 31, 2025.
It is available to students who are enrolled, whether full-time or part-time, in accredited degree-granting institutions in the US or Canada. Subscribing to ChatGPT Plus offers several advantages over the free version. Users can choose between different models, including GPT-4o, o1, o3-mini, and o3-mini-high, and they gain access to GPT-4.5, currently in preview, which is touted as OpenAI’s superior chat model. The Plus subscription also provides faster response times, priority access during peak usage periods, and greater accuracy, making it an excellent tool for students managing assignments.
Additional features include support for image inputs, file uploads, and personalized custom instructions. To claim the free ChatGPT Plus offer, students must verify their enrollment through SheerID, a secure service that checks against official university records, including the school’s Office of the Registrar. In some instances, students may need to log in via their institution’s single sign-on system or upload relevant documents. Notably, even current ChatGPT Plus subscribers can benefit from this offer; once verified, their accounts will receive an automatic credit for two free months.
However, eligibility may vary among institutions, and students must complete the verification process to determine if they qualify. After the offer period concludes, the subscription will automatically renew at the standard monthly rate unless canceled.
