NetherSX2 Introduces Hardcore RetroAchievements Support for Enhanced Gaming Experience – Android Authority

A new update to the PS2 emulator NetherSX2 has introduced Hardcore RetroAchievements on Android for passionate retro gamers. This feature provides a true challenge by eliminating modern conveniences like save states, rewind, and cheats.

Players must navigate games using skill alone, making it a rigorous test for those eager to earn recognition in the competitive retro gaming community. Previously announced last year, changes to the criteria for unlocking Hardcore RetroAchievements have become effective.

With the release of version 1.8, NetherSX2 now allows users to enable this hardcore mode, which rewards players with “real” achievements. If players attempt to use prohibited features, their achievements will downgrade to Softcore, which are not tracked competitively.

An alert appears on the screen to prevent any accidental loss of progress. Hardcore RetroAchievements offer substantial rewards, including mastery badges akin to Platinum Trophies on PlayStation, and contribute to standings on global leaderboards.

Conversely, Softcore achievements are more casual and typically do not factor into competitive events. However, some emulator functions like fast forward remain permissible within Hardcore mode.

RetroAchievements, which launched in 2012, has grown significantly and now monitors over 5 million achievements across more than 9,300 retro games and ROM hacks, with an active user base exceeding one million. Notably, user Sarconius leads the rankings with mastery in over 1,000 retro games.

As the gaming community continues to evolve, features like Hardcore RetroAchievements on NetherSX2 provide a meaningful way for players to showcase their skills and compete for recognition in the rich history of retro gaming.
