Whoop is currently facing significant backlash after altering its policy regarding free hardware upgrades. Many long-time users claim that the company broke its initial promise, which guaranteed a complimentary upgrade to the next version of their fitness tracker after six months of membership. Following the recent launch of the Whoop 5.0, individuals are now being asked to either extend their membership or pay a fee to access the new hardware.
Reports indicate that Whoop had previously assured members that those subscribed for at least six months would automatically receive the next-generation device free of charge. However, this policy appears to have been changed without prior notice. Customers are now confronted with two options: they can extend their membership by a year to receive the Whoop 5.0 or Whoop 5.0 MG at no extra cost, or they can opt to pay an upgrade fee ranging from $49 to $79.
Alarmingly, only those who joined or renewed their membership within the last 30 days are still eligible for a free upgrade. This abrupt shift has caused frustration among long-standing users, with many expressing their feelings of betrayal on social media platforms. An archived version of Whoop’s website confirms the original promise, stating that members were entitled to a complimentary device upgrade after six months, a statement that has since been removed from the current membership page.
Importantly, customer dissatisfaction stems not just from the financial implications but from the perceived breach of trust. Many users feel that the company’s new direction undermines their loyalty and commitment. The Whoop 5.0 and Whoop MG introduce advanced features like ECG support and blood pressure monitoring, but the fallout from the membership changes may overshadow these innovations.
