Google has introduced a new “Unsubscribe” feature for its Messages app, designed to help users manage unwanted messages from businesses. This rollout is aimed at combatting unsolicited promotional content, allowing users to effectively reduce spam in their messaging experience. The feature is now accessible in several countries, including the US, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain, and the UK. Businesses often send necessary messages, such as package delivery notifications or appointment reminders, which are welcome.
However, the influx of unsolicited promotional messages can be overwhelming. To address this issue, Google has made it easier for users to regain control over their messaging experience. The “Unsubscribe” feature was first discovered during an APK teardown earlier this year and has since become widely available. When users receive a message from a business, an Unsubscribe button will now appear above the text field.
Additionally, this feature can be accessed through the chat menu. Upon tapping the Unsubscribe option, users will be prompted to select a reason for their decision. Options include “Not signed up,” “Too many messages,” “No longer interested,” “Spam,” and “Other.” If “Spam” is selected, users can report the sender, after which the conversation will be moved to the “Spam & blocked” folder.
By tapping Unsubscribe, users send a “STOP” message to the sender, which should cease any non-essential communication. However, users may still receive vital messages that they have requested. If a business cannot comply with the unsubscribe request, it may redirect users to their account settings to modify message notifications. This Unsubscribe feature differs from the blocking option, as it allows for the possibility of resubscribing if users change their minds.
It is available for RCS for Business messages and SMS/MMS messages from designated senders in the specified regions.
