Google is enhancing its Gemini assistant, positioning it to rival ChatGPT with more advanced features aimed at improving user interactions. Soon, Gemini will be capable of recalling previous conversations, similar to ChatGPT’s memory function, allowing for more personalized and relevant exchanges. Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs and Gemini, announced this development on social media, sharing that Gemini will also learn from activities across various Google applications like Gmail, Calendar, and YouTube. This move follows OpenAI’s recent update to ChatGPT, which introduced a memory function that allows the assistant to remember user interactions to create tailored responses.
Google’s strategy seems to focus on providing Gemini with a robust memory system that enables it to track past chats, thus enhancing its understanding of user preferences over time. In addition to the memory feature, Google is testing a new capability known as “pcontext,” which aims to pool insights from a user’s entire Google account. This feature is still in its internal testing phase, but in essence, it will allow Gemini to integrate data from various services such as Photos and Search, thereby enriching its contextual understanding of users’ lives. However, the introduction of such comprehensive integration raises privacy concerns.
While Google assures users that explicit permission will be required before accessing their data, uncertainties remain about how this information will be utilized and stored. Overall, Google’s ambitions for Gemini extend beyond being a mere chatbot; the goal is to develop a proactive and intuitive assistant that understands and anticipates user needs, ultimately acting as an integral part of one’s digital experience. More details about these advancements are expected to be unveiled at Google I/O starting May 20.
