Google Translate May Soon Compete Directly with Duolingo for Language Learning Market Share

Google Translate is reportedly developing a new “Practice” feature aimed at helping users enhance their language skills. An APK teardown revealed that, while the feature isn’t functional yet, it can be activated when translating between English and Spanish. This feature will require microphone access and user sign-ins, hinting at possible voice-based activities and progress tracking, similar to the approach taken by language-learning apps like Duolingo. The utility of Google Translate in facilitating easy communication across different languages is well recognized.

However, its primary focus has been on translation rather than language acquisition. This gap has allowed apps like Duolingo to thrive with their engaging, gamified methods of language learning. Interestingly, Google has previously offered speaking practice for English learners through its search engine. The new Practice feature in Google Translate v9.7.102 includes code that indicates its potential to assist users in becoming more proficient in their chosen languages.

Currently, it works only with the English-Spanish language pair, but there is potential for more languages to be added before its official launch. When available, users will notice a new “Practice” button on the main Google Translate page, which will likely be marked as a beta feature. Upon clicking the Practice button, users will be welcomed with engaging activities. However, at this stage, the feature does not function, attempting to open a non-existent webpage within the app.

Reports suggest users will need to sign in and allow microphone access for the full functionality of this feature, indicating it will incorporate voice-related tasks and track progress. As Google has not released detailed information about the Practice feature, it may take some time before it becomes widely available. Further updates will be provided as new information emerges.
