Amazon May Launch New TV Streamer, Signaling Shift Away from Android This Year

Amazon is reportedly set to launch a TV streaming device powered by its new operating system, Vega, as early as 2025. The company aims to distance itself from Android by moving away from Fire OS, which is a modified version of Android, to embrace its proprietary OS.

This shift signifies Amazon’s commitment to developing technology that operates outside the Android ecosystem. According to industry insider Janko Roettgers, Amazon intends to release this new TV streaming device sometime later this year.

The company has been actively encouraging major content publishers to make their apps compatible with the Vega platform. Previously, there were plans to introduce a Vega-powered streaming stick in 2024, but these plans have since been postponed.

Vega OS is reported to be Linux-based rather than Android-based. In 2023, Amazon encouraged app developers to utilize React Native for creating applications that would function seamlessly on both the new Vega system and older devices running Android.

It’s believed that Amazon has long-term goals to eventually phase out Fire OS in favor of Vega. While Amazon has not officially unveiled Vega yet, users have already experienced a taste of the operating system.

Notably, the Vega OS is currently operational on devices such as the Echo Show 5, Echo Hub smart displays, and the Echo Spot, hinting at the company’s ongoing efforts to establish its presence in the smart device market with its own operating framework. As further details emerge, it will be intriguing to see how consumers react to Amazon’s new direction away from Android and how the company’s plans for Vega OS unfold in the coming years.
