Google has announced the release of its new AI model, Gemini 2.5 Flash, which is designed to enhance reasoning capabilities while allowing users to customize performance settings. This model is notable for being lightweight and is currently available for preview through the Gemini API, AI Studio, and Vertex AI. Users can also access it via the Gemini app.
Building upon its predecessor, Gemini 2.0 Flash, this iteration maintains the speed and cost-effectiveness while significantly improving reasoning functionalities. Notably, it introduces adjustable thinking settings, enabling developers to toggle reasoning functions and set a thinking budget for each query. This feature allows for greater control over the model’s intelligence level on a case-by-case basis.
To highlight the versatility of Gemini 2.5 Flash, Google shared benchmark results demonstrating its effectiveness across various tasks, including mathematics, science, reasoning, and code generation. While it may not dominate all categories compared to competing AI models, it offers impressive value for its price. Google describes it as a “Pareto frontier” model, meaning it provides an optimal balance between speed, cost, and quality, without compromising any one aspect to enhance another.
In addition to its reasoning capabilities, Gemini 2.5 Flash comes with new features in the Gemini app, such as Canvas, which serves as a collaborative workspace for refining text and code. This launch adds to the ever-expanding lineup of Gemini models, following previous releases including Gemini 1.5 Pro, 1.5 Flash, and Gemini 2.0 Flash, which reflect Google’s commitment to providing developers with diverse options in AI technology.
