Chrome for Android has recently received an exciting visual upgrade with the rollout of version 135, introducing an immersive edge-to-edge layout. This update allows web content to extend seamlessly behind the gesture bar, enhancing the viewing experience on small-screen devices. At present, this feature is only available for phones using gesture navigation and does not apply to tablets or devices utilizing the three-button navigation system. The new design was initially tested last month and is now gradually reaching users.
With the updated layout, the Chrome browser now showcases content all the way down to the bottom of the screen. The gesture navigation bar, rather than appearing on a solid background, now floats transparently over the webpage, providing a cleaner and more full-screen aesthetic. Inside, this feature is powered by a “dynamic bottom bar,” commonly referred to as “the chin” within Google. This component retracts as users scroll down, creating the illusion that web content fills the entire screen.
The background reappears when users scroll back up, although it is important to note that the update does not alter the structure or display of websites. Google has also cautioned that, in certain cases, the gesture bar might obscure portions of the web content. It’s worth noting that while Chrome 135 is available through the Play Store, the edge-to-edge effect is part of a separate server-side rollout. This means that not all users will experience the new feature immediately, even if they have the correct version installed.
Currently, the change is exclusive to Android phones with gesture navigation, and support for tablets is anticipated in future updates.
