Love Quick Tap? Google may soon turn your entire Pixel into a touch-sensitive device!

Google is exploring new technology that could significantly enhance its Pixel devices, based on a recent patent filing. The patent, submitted to the World Intellectual Property Office on April 3, outlines a concept for a touch-sensitive frame and back of devices.

This innovation aims to enable users to perform various tasks, like adjusting volume or scrubbing through videos, without even touching the main display. Historically, Google Pixel phones have featured Quick Tap functionality, allowing actions by double-tapping the rear cover.

However, this new patent seems to push the boundaries further. It suggests the ability to recognize gestures at any point on the device’s exterior, potentially offering a more intuitive user experience.

The technology involves a “presence-sensitive housing” that identifies gesture inputs and executes corresponding actions, which could include changing screen orientation or rearranging elements in the user interface. Additionally, Google aims to implement machine-learning algorithms to distinguish between intentional gestures and unintentional touches, such as when a user is simply holding the device.

While the patent emphasizes applications for smartphones, the technology could also extend to tablets, laptops, smart speakers, and other devices. The prospect of a touch-sensitive frame is particularly exciting, as it could serve as an advanced version of the Active Edge feature previously seen in older Google Pixel models.

Similarly, a touch-sensitive rear cover would be a notable addition, reminiscent of the OPPO N1 smartphone’s early implementation of a rear touch panel. Although such features have been rare in the smartphone landscape, this patent could herald a new wave of gesture recognition technology in future Pixel devices.
