Gemini, the AI assistant on Android, currently only supports sending text messages through Google Messages. When prompted to send images, Gemini merely generates a blank URL, as it does not yet support multimedia messaging services (MMS).
However, recent findings from an APK teardown suggest that Gemini may soon incorporate Rich Communication Services (RCS), enhancing its capabilities to include image sharing. As it stands, Gemini can assist users in crafting various text messages, such as birthday greetings, jokes, or congratulatory notes.
Once the command is given, it leverages Google Messages to send the text. However, the absence of MMS support limits its functionality; users cannot request Gemini to send images directly.
The introduction of RCS could change this, allowing for the transmission of multimedia messages. APK teardowns are essential tools for predicting future features by examining code in development.
Despite the insights gleaned, it is important to note that features identified may not necessarily be rolled out in a public update. Currently, if you attempt to send an image using Gemini, the recipient will receive a blank URL due to the limitations imposed by the text messaging protocols in use.
According to Google’s support pages, Gemini is unable to perform several functions within the Messages app. These limitations include reading or summarizing messages, creating group chats, and incorporating images, GIFs, or videos.
Recent updates suggest that RCS functionality is on the horizon for Gemini. Code indicates that it will soon assess the RCS capabilities of devices involved in a conversation.
If both sender and receiver are RCS-compatible, Gemini may send multimedia messages; otherwise, it will revert to SMS. While the specific timeline for these enhancements has yet to be announced by Google, further updates are anticipated.
