This flagship phone features dual zoom lenses but surprisingly includes just one zoom camera. Confused?

HUAWEI has officially unveiled the Pura 80 series, including the standout Pura 80 Ultra smartphone. This flagship model introduces a unique camera system that features a single zoom camera used for two periscope lenses, capable of 3.7x and 9.4x zoom. The intriguing aspect of this setup is its “switchable tele lens,” where a prism shifts between the two lenses as necessary, offering a fresh approach compared to other variable telephoto systems, such as Sony’s, which moves the lenses to change zoom levels.

The Pura 80 Ultra boasts a large 1/1.28-inch zoom camera sensor, which HUAWEI claims to be the largest in the industry. Interestingly, the model includes a 50MP f/2.4 and a 12.5MP f/3.6 telephoto camera, both relying on the same sensor, raising questions about the apparent resolution differences. It appears there may be cropping involved during long-range shots, but further information on this aspect remains speculative.

In addition to its innovative zoom capabilities, the Ultra is equipped with a one-inch 50MP RYYB main camera featuring a variable aperture system, reputed to deliver exceptional dynamic range. The camera lineup is complemented by a 40MP ultrawide sensor and a 1.5MP red maple sensor for improved color information, while selfies are handled by a 13MP front camera. Beyond its impressive camera features, the Pura 80 Ultra includes a vibrant 6.8-inch 120Hz OLED display, a robust 5,700mAh battery, and fast charging options of 100W wired and 80W wireless.

Running on Harmony OS 5.1, it notably does not support Android apps. In China, the Pura 80 Ultra is priced at 9,999 yuan (approximately $1,391) for the 16GB/512GB version, and 10,999 yuan (about $1,530) for the 16GB/1TB model. HUAWEI often expands its flagship releases to global markets soon after their domestic debut, leaving hopes high for availability beyond China.
