Pixel Watch May Soon Introduce Water Lock Mode with Wear OS 6 Update – Android Authority

Google is reportedly working on introducing a “Water Lock” mode for Wear OS, which is anticipated to debut with the upcoming Wear OS 6 update for the Pixel Watch. This new feature would primarily disable the touchscreen functionality, mitigating any erratic behavior or unintended touches that might occur when the watch is exposed to water.

Many modern smartwatches boast high water resistance, allowing users to wear them while swimming or showering without fear of damage. However, water exposure can complicate the functionality of capacitive touchscreens, often leading to false touches and sensitivity issues.

To address these problems, several smartwatches have incorporated a “Water Lock” mode that effectively prevents touchscreen activation. Currently, the Pixel Watch lacks a dedicated Water Lock mode, though it does disable touch inputs during swimming workouts.

However, it does not provide the same functionality when worn in the rain or during showering. The anticipated introduction of the Water Lock shortcut in Wear OS 6 could significantly enhance the device’s usability in wet conditions.

Recent findings within the Wear OS 6 Developer Preview have indicated the emergence of new text strings pointing to a “Water Lock” Quick Settings tile. Although specific details are still sparse, it’s expected that this feature will allow users to activate the Water Lock mode easily.

Notably, there is no indication in the code of a water ejection feature, which would typically accompany such a mode by playing a sound to clear water from the speaker. Without this feature, the new Water Lock mode may simply serve as a clearly labeled option that duplicates the existing “Touch Lock” functionality before using the watch in wet environments.

Ultimately, while there are signs of development for the Water Lock feature, its inclusion in the final Wear OS 6 update remains uncertain. Users will need to stay tuned to see if Google rolls out this functionality for its devices.
