Is OPPO the Driving Force Behind Android 16’s Top Multitasking Feature?

There has been some discussion regarding OPPO’s involvement in the multitasking feature of Android 16. Recently, an executive from OPPO stated that the new 90:10 multitasking system in Android 16 was a “small contribution from OPPO” to Google. However, OPPO later clarified that the feature simply “draws inspiration” from its own multitasking systems.

Android 16’s multitasking capabilities allow one app to occupy 90% of the screen, while a second app uses the remaining 10%. This setup closely resembles OPPO’s Boundless View and OnePlus’s OpenCanvas multitasking features. Despite the OPPO executive’s comments, there is some ambiguity about whether OPPO formally donated this feature to Google.

Zhu Haizhou, the OPPO executive, mentioned on Weibo that the 90:10 split-screen multitasking feature of Android 16 took cues from OPPO’s Boundless View. This feature was first introduced on the OPPO Find N3 in 2023 and was later implemented in other models via ColorOS 15. OPPO expressed its satisfaction that Google recognized the concept and integrated a similar feature into Android 16.

While OPPO did not officially donate the feature, the overlapping functionalities aren’t surprising, as Google often incorporates innovations from various OEMs into its stock Android. Regardless of the origins, the adaptation of this feature in Android 16 is beneficial for users, as it could pave the way for increased adoption among different brands. In fact, Samsung has already integrated a similar functionality into the One UI 8 beta for the Galaxy S25 series.

Furthermore, OnePlus’s OpenCanvas on the OnePlus Open foldable has been praised for its ability to run three apps in split-view mode, which could soon be available for tablets and foldables operating on Android 16. As we await the Galaxy Z Fold 7, it seems that this multitasking feature will continue to gain traction in upcoming devices.
