Recent analysis of the Google Photos app has unveiled several notable visual changes that may be on the horizon. An APK teardown of the latest version of the app has revealed a revamped video player, featuring larger controls that make it easier for users to rewind or fast-forward content using gesture controls. Additionally, an updated search results page is in the works, though opinions on its effectiveness are mixed. These improvements come as part of a broader initiative by Google to revamp various apps in line with its Material 3 Expressive design principles seen in Android 16.
The changes are part of a larger trend where multiple Google applications are receiving similar design updates, enhancing their visual appeal and user experience. Among the most significant updates is the redesigned video player, which includes a larger timeline with a vertical scrubbing icon, improved visibility of video duration, and a more streamlined interface that replaces the cast icon. Other functional changes to the video player include a new “Add to” button positioned alongside options to share, edit, or delete content. Users will also find a new feature that allows them to control rewinding and fast-forwarding by pressing the left or right side of the screen.
In terms of search functionality, the new design shifts the search bar to the bottom of the screen and organizes “best match” results into a square gallery format that appears larger than previous iterations. The old interface allowed for more matches to be displayed simultaneously, raising questions about the efficiency of the new layout. It’s important to note that previous iterations of the Google Photos video player redesign did not result in public releases, leaving uncertainty over whether these new features will eventually make it to users. However, the alignment with Google’s Material 3 Expressive design suggests a potential wider rollout in the future.
Other Google applications, including Gmail and the Phone app, are also reported to be in line for similar visual enhancements.
