Google appears to be experimenting with new AI voices in its NotebookLM application, as users have reported hearing a mysterious third male voice during longer audio overviews. The company has acknowledged plans to introduce additional voices and dialects, as well as APIs and video overviews. However, it remains unclear whether this third voice is a planned feature or an unintended glitch.
NotebookLM has gained a reputation as a successful AI research assistant, allowing users to have control over the data sources and minimizing the chances of errors or “hallucinations.” Its Audio Overviews feature can effectively convert notes into a podcast format, with conversations between two AI hosts. Recent observations suggest that a potential third host may be introduced, enhancing the variety of voices available.
A Reddit user noted the appearance of the third voice in their Audio Overviews, which complements the existing male and female voices already present. Other users have echoed similar experiences, particularly during the creation of longer podcasts. Some community members speculate that this may be a temporary glitch, as they have noticed an increase in voice anomalies during usage.
Despite the uncertainty, Google has confirmed that there will be new voices and dialects arriving soon, alongside enhancements like new source types and video overviews. While one might assume that Google is secretly testing these new voices, it’s likely that the company would prefer to showcase such updates publicly. We have reached out to Google to clarify whether the third voice is an intentional feature or a bug.
As new information becomes available, we will provide updates on this development.
