Introducing the First Waterproof and Dust-Resistant Foldable Device Ready for Launch!

Vivo is set to make waves in the smartphone industry with the announcement of its upcoming X Fold 5 foldable phone, which is notable for being both dust-resistant and waterproof. This groundbreaking device boasts ratings of IP5X for dust resistance, and IPX8 and IPX9 for water resistance. This marks a significant step forward as it becomes the first foldable phone to offer both features simultaneously. Historically, foldable phones have fallen short compared to traditional devices regarding IP ratings.

While some models have showcased water or dust resistance, none have achieved dual protection until now. Vivo executive Han Boxiao shared the news on Weibo, highlighting that the X Fold 5 can withstand not only water submersion but also the challenges posed by dust. The IPX9 rating signifies that the phone can endure high-pressure, hot water jets. By contrast, current competitors like Samsung’s Galaxy Z6 devices have an IP48 rating, which means they are water-resistant but lack dust resistance.

In fact, the Galaxy Z6 can only fend off particles that are 1mm in size or larger, which is smaller than typical dust particles. Other foldable devices, such as the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, usually hold an IPX8 rating, which offers no dust protection at all. The X Fold 5’s capacity to be seamlessly opened and closed up to a thousand times in water up to one meter deep is an interesting feature, although the practicality of this capability may be questioned. Overall, this development significantly narrows the gap between foldable devices and traditional smartphones, providing users with more assurance regarding the durability of their devices.
