The rollout of the Ask Photos feature in Google Photos has been halted due to performance issues. Introduced last year, this AI-powered tool was designed to enhance users’ ability to search for specific memories or information within their photo libraries. However, Google has now paused its rollout, indicating that it has not yet met the company’s expectations. Jamie Aspinall, the Product Manager for Google Photos, acknowledged the setbacks on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the rollout has been paused for “very small numbers” while key issues like latency, quality, and user experience are addressed.
Aspinall further mentioned that it will take approximately two weeks to resolve these concerns, after which a more refined version will be released that reinstates the speed and effectiveness reminiscent of the original search function. Ask Photos utilizes Gemini, a large language model, allowing users to employ natural language in queries to locate specific items within their photo collections. The feature aims to simplify the search process for users, making it easier to find particular memories or information contained in their galleries. In addition to these developments, Google Photos has introduced a new functionality that lets users use quotation marks to search for exact text matches in their images.
This enhancement enables users to locate words in filenames, camera models, captions, or text within photos more precisely.
