Google Messages is taking steps to encourage users to enable RCS (Rich Communication Services) for a better messaging experience. Currently, to enjoy the enhanced features of RCS, all participants in a conversation must have it activated. A recent APK teardown has revealed that Google Messages is developing a feature that allows users to send invitations to friends who have yet to turn on RCS.
The arrival of RCS has made messaging on Android significantly more robust, allowing users to enjoy features like emoji reactions and high-quality media sharing. This has played an essential role in bridging the gap between Android and iOS users. However, a key limitation remains: everyone involved in a conversation must have RCS enabled.
The Google Messages build being reviewed includes strings of text suggesting that the app will soon prompt users to invite their contacts to enable RCS. For instance, users may see messages like “Hi! I noticed you’re using SMS to text.
We can share high-quality media and send secure messages when we’re both on RCS. Want to try?” This new feature will notify users when their conversation partner is not using RCS, offering an option to send a friendly reminder.
By implementing this, Google hopes to motivate RCS hold-outs to join the service. Once the feature is live, it could lead to an influx of reminders sent to those still on traditional SMS. Whether this will effectively convince them to switch remains to be seen.
