Google is currently testing a redesigned search bar for the Pixel Launcher as part of the latest Android 16 QPR1 beta update. This new design has already started appearing for some users and features a more compact search bar alongside a circular AI mode button on the right side. This update brings the launcher in line with the recently released home screen widget that also includes an AI Mode shortcut.
Feedback from users on platforms like Telegram and Reddit indicates that the redesigned search bar is gradually being rolled out, although it has not reached all users yet. The transformation includes a smaller search bar compared to the previous version, with the AI Mode button now positioned separately rather than embedded within the search bar itself. This change creates a cleaner, more streamlined look with the elements housed in a larger pill-shaped background that contrasts nicely with the search bar.
While this redesign enhances the visual consistency of the Pixel Launcher, it is important to note that Google has not yet applied this segmented design to the search bar located at the top of the app drawer. As we move closer to the stable release of the Android 16 QPR1 update later this year, there may be additional enhancements and adjustments in store. Any new developments will be shared as they become available.
