Google has introduced a live captions feature for Gemini Live, enabling users to read responses in real time. This functionality is particularly useful in noisy environments or when the device’s volume is too low, allowing for discreet conversations without the need for audio. The live captions can be activated by simply tapping a new button located in the top-right corner of Gemini Live’s full-screen interface. Initially spotted in a software teardown earlier this year, this feature is now being gradually rolled out, although it’s not yet universally available.
Reports from users on various platforms indicate that the new live caption button is available on select devices running version 16.21.57 of the Google app. When users attempt to start or resume a conversation with low volume, Gemini Live will prompt them to enable the live captions for a better experience. Moreover, Google has incorporated customization options allowing users to modify both the style and size of the captions. These settings can be accessed via the Gemini settings under “Caption preferences,” providing users with the flexibility to tailor their experience to their liking.
This enhancement aims to improve communication for those who might struggle in traditional audio settings, making conversations more accessible and efficient. Users are encouraged to check for this feature on their devices and share their experiences, noting whether they have access to the live captions functionality in Gemini Live. Feedback and tips can be shared directly with the Android Authority staff via email, ensuring that user voices are heard and any improvements can be implemented based on their input.
