The upcoming Wear OS 6 update may introduce a new adaptive charging feature aimed at extending the battery life of smartwatches. This feature is designed to pause charging at around 80% and then smartly resume it to achieve a full charge based on the user’s daily charging habits. Evidence of this functionality has surfaced in the Wear OS developer preview, with competitors like Samsung reportedly working on similar battery protection technologies. To ensure the longevity of your device’s battery, it’s generally advisable not to leave it connected to a charger for too long.
Many smartphones have implemented features that pause charging at 80%, reducing wear and tear on the battery. However, most smartwatches have yet to adopt similar measures. Fortunately, the Wear OS 6 update may bridge that gap. While exploring the Wear OS 6 Developer Preview, indications of an “adaptive charging” feature were found in the ClockworkSysUiGoogle app.
This feature enables the watch to charge to a certain level and then finish charging by a specific time, likely based on user behavior. Users will also have the flexibility to override this function, allowing the watch to charge to 100% whenever needed. Although precise details about charging percentages or timing remain unconfirmed, it is expected that the adaptive charging feature will resemble the Adaptive Charging found on Pixel phones. This functionality typically pauses charging at 80% and completes it about an hour before the user usually disconnects the device.
While developer previews do not guarantee that features will be included in final releases, there are further indications supporting the arrival of this adaptive charging. Google is reportedly working to integrate this feature into its smartwatch lineup, which may debut with the Wear OS 6 update. Notably, Samsung is also focusing on a similar battery preservation feature for its Galaxy Watch series, anticipated with their upcoming One UI Watch 8 release.
