Recent rumors about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 have introduced some conflicting information regarding the S Pen’s technology. Initially, it appeared that Samsung might be planning to release a stylus equipped with a built-in battery. However, the latest rumors indicate a departure from that idea. It seems the Fold 7 may actually be compatible with existing S Pens, though users might experience variations in input latency.
Historically, Samsung’s S Pen functioned through a digitizer panel embedded in the device’s screen, which tracked the lightweight, unpowered stylus. This provided the advantage of a compact stylus that could often be stored within the device. However, this digitizing technology has contributed to the overall thickness of the phone. For the Fold 7, there were suggestions that Samsung might eliminate the digitizer to create a slimmer device, instead incorporating more technology into the stylus itself.
This change was initially perceived as leading to a thicker S Pen, yet the perceived advantage of reducing phone bulk alleviated concerns about carrying the stylus externally. Furthermore, leaker PandaFlash has indicated that the Galaxy S26 Ultra might similarly adopt a new tracking system, eliminating the need for a digitizer and potentially allowing for features like internal magnets for Qi2 wireless charging. Nonetheless, this could mean sacrificing the internal storage slot for the stylus. Recent updates suggest the Fold 7 will indeed support the existing S Pen from the Fold 6, albeit with noted differences in input latency.
This ambiguity regarding tracking technology raises questions about the feasibility of combining a stylus slot with Qi2 magnetic capability. With Samsung’s Unpacked event scheduled for July 9, fans eagerly await clearer insights into the new S Pen’s functionality.
