Google’s Gemini team has recently sent out emails that could raise concerns for users regarding privacy. The email announces that starting on July 7, 2025, Gemini will have the capability to assist with applications like Phone, Messages, and WhatsApp, regardless of whether users have the Gemini Apps Activity feature activated or not. This vague communication has led to escalating privacy concerns among users, leaving many uncertain about whether Gemini will retain access to these applications even if they choose to opt out. Furthermore, the email suggests that users who wish to prevent these features can disable them via “App settings,” yet it does not provide any specific instructions on how to accomplish this.
Many users have expressed confusion over the ambiguous phrasing, particularly since the email claims these functionalities will remain available whether or not Gemini Apps Activity is turned on. The guidance offered in the email states, “If you don’t want to use these features, you can turn them off in the Apps settings page,” but it fails to clarify where such an option can be found or what specific features users will be able to disable. The uncertainty surrounding what “help you use” entails leaves many questions unanswered. Users are concerned about whether Gemini would be able to read or send messages, access call logs, or interact with third-party apps like WhatsApp by default.
With this change set to take effect in less than two weeks, inquiries have been sent to Google for more detailed clarifications. The email and its contents have drawn attention from various users online, contributing to ongoing discussions around privacy and data security in relation to Gemini’s new capabilities.
