Android’s call interface is undergoing significant updates with the recent Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 release. This latest version introduces enhanced functionality for the ongoing call chip, a feature that has been a part of Google’s Pixels since Android 12 debuted four years ago. Previously, tapping on the call chip would route users to a full-screen call interface. However, in the new Android 16 QPR1, the call chip now reveals a user-friendly UI element similar to those found in the notification shade.
This updated interface allows users to perform essential tasks during a call, such as hanging up, adjusting the speaker, or muting the microphone with ease. Should users wish to access the full-screen call UI, they can simply tap on this new pop-up. This improvement is a welcomed change, drawing some parallels with Samsung’s interface customizations in One UI 7, where users can manage timers, media controls, and more. Interestingly, while Samsung has made strides in its call chip functionality in recent updates, they continue to use the older design in their One UI 7 and One UI 8 beta versions.
In addition to enhancing the call interface, this update hints at how users will interact with Live Updates, a new feature introduced in Android 16. This functionality is akin to Apple’s Live Activities and Samsung’s Live Notifications, and it is expected to expand in future releases, enabling more applications to make use of Live Updates and status bar enhancements.
