The latest update, Android 16 QPR1, brings a significant overhaul to Android’s sound settings. Google is introducing a cleaner and more organized “Sound & vibration” settings page, moving away from the cluttered vertical list that has long been a source of frustration for users. In the Android 16 QPR1 beta, after installing it on a Pixel device, users will find that the settings are now grouped into specific categories such as “sound patterns” and “Audio.”
Previously, options like “phone ringtone,” “default notification sound,” and “default alarm sound” were scattered throughout a chaotic range of settings. This is now streamlined under the new classification, making it easier to find what users need. Additionally, while the five volume sliders remain at the top, they have received a visual update with a modern design that enhances the overall user experience.
The changes come after years of accumulated features in the Android OS, which at times left the sound settings unmanageable. The new layout not only organizes settings into relevant categories but also relocates certain elements for improved functionality. For instance, the “audio will play on” option is now positioned at the top of the volume section, eliminating confusion.
Despite the progress, there are still areas for improvement, particularly in the “system sounds & vibrations” section, which remains somewhat overcrowded. However, the overall redesign, highlighted by Google’s Material 3 Expressive aesthetic, breathes new life into the Sound & vibration page, making the Settings app feel more cohesive. In summary, this update marks a positive shift for Android users who have sought greater organization and clarity in their sound settings.
