Reports suggest that the game will occur on the opening weekend of the NFL season and will feature the Los Angeles Chargers taking on an undisclosed opponent. This arrangement signifies a new venture for the league, which has increasingly partnered with digital platforms like Amazon and Netflix for game broadcasting.
What sets this potential deal apart is the accessibility it offers. Unlike Amazon and Netflix, which require paid subscriptions, YouTube is a free platform. This means that the NFL’s exclusive game could reach a global audience without the need for an actual subscription, allowing more fans to engage with the game.
For those subscribed to YouTube TV, the game will also be available through that service. This development carries significant implications, particularly regarding regulations outlined in the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961. The Act restricts the NFL from broadcasting games on Fridays or Saturdays during certain months, primarily to protect high school and college football.
However, YouTube may exploit a loophole in this legislation. The league has previously navigated around this rule with Black Friday games, where a stipulation allows a game to be aired if it concludes before 6 p.m. local time. If the deal is finalized, the Chargers’ matchup will take place in Brazil, with their opposing team expected to be disclosed on May 13.
