Scientists Aim to Enhance Roombas’ Efficiency as Current Models Show Signs of Laziness – Android Authority

Robot vacuums have become a common household item, but research shows they are not being fully utilized. On average, these devices operate for less than two hours each day, leaving them idle for the majority of their time.

While it would be ideal for technology to take on additional household tasks, we are not quite there yet. However, a group of researchers from the University of Bath has pushed the boundaries of what a Roomba can do beyond just cleaning floors.

Traditionally, robot vacuums are designed for one main function: cleaning. This limitation means that those with multi-level homes often need multiple devices since they cannot navigate stairs.

The researchers noted that typical robot vacuums sit idle for most of the day, prompting them to explore how these machines could be equipped for versatility. Their study outlined around 100 potential tasks suitable for modification, including useful additions like a mobile charger that follows the user, a projector for displaying videos, and a live video feed for home surveillance.

One of the more ambitious proposals was to enable a Roomba to transport groceries from the car to the kitchen. However, given the Roomba’s struggles with basic obstacles, such as rugs and cords, this idea appears far-fetched.

Other more plausible suggestions include adding features for watering plants or even entertaining pets with laser pointers. While the potential for enhancing our robotic companions is exciting, it’s important to consider their current limitations.

Until these devices improve their core functions, expecting them to multitask efficiently might be overly optimistic.
