Material 3 Expressive: Infuse Vibrant Colors Into Your Current Apps

Google is set to introduce Material 3 Expressive later this year, which promises to refresh the look of Android devices. The recent announcements during I/O 2025 and the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 have already given users a sneak peek into the vibrant changes coming their way. Once Material 3 Expressive fully launches, existing apps that use dynamic color theming will automatically benefit from enhanced color palettes without requiring additional updates from developers. The new design language focuses not only on the overall aesthetics but also on the shape and layout of UI elements across apps and the operating system.

Alongside the visual enhancements in layout, there will be significant upgrades to color, with support for dynamic theming evolving to include bolder, more vibrant tones. Google aims to enhance the user experience by offering a diverse range of color choices that complement each other while standing out. Andrew Lu, a designer at Google, explains that themes will become richer and more varied. The upgrades to dynamic color will unlock greater variation and higher chroma across all hues.

This means users will have more options for personalization, whether they prefer subtle neutrals or vibrant shades. Perhaps the best news for users is how these color enhancements will be implemented. Apps that currently utilize dynamic theming will automatically adopt the improved color palettes, ensuring that users won’t need to wait for every app developer to make code adjustments. While it’s true that we still need to wait for Android 16 to reach stable status alongside QPR1, the anticipation of existing apps becoming significantly more visually appealing is just around the corner.
