Google is currently developing an ‘expressive’ version of Material Design, which is anticipated to be unveiled at Google I/O 2025. Recent findings show that this new expressive theme has already been activated within the Google Services settings page in Android. This development is part of a broader shift toward adopting the upcoming Material 3 Expressive theme across various applications. In recent months, there have been numerous indications that a significant UI overhaul is underway for Android, which aligns with the new expressive design principles.
Notably, the redesign of the Google Play settings has been observed, further exemplifying this transition to the Material 3 Expressive theme. An APK teardown has revealed that features may emerge from ongoing code developments, though there is no guarantee that all these features will debut in a public release. Within version 25.17.31 of Google Play Services, the expressive UI elements were successfully activated, providing a glimpse into the future look of Android, potentially in Android 16 QPR 1 or even Android 17. Screenshots indicate that the design includes prominent switches with distinct icons, visually distinct cards for settings entries, and generous use of bold text.
The interface also incorporates the Google Sans Flex font, adding to the updated aesthetic. However, not all sections of Google Play Settings will feature this new design; certain sub-pages, such as Connected apps and Play Games, rely on webviews and cannot be themed until Google updates the corresponding web pages. As of now, the ‘Expressive’ design is not yet live, and the exact timeline for its public rollout remains undetermined. Nevertheless, evidence suggests Google is preparing to launch this fresh design at their upcoming event, followed by a redesign of all Google apps.
