Google Revamps Search Bar on Smartphones: A Fresh New Look – Android Authority

Google has recently introduced an updated design for the Search bar widget in its latest app update (version 16.17). This redesigned Search bar is aimed at enhancing user experience by emphasizing the custom shortcut button, making it easier for users to access various tools. The Search bar has become a staple on Android phones, serving as a quick way to initiate internet searches.

Previously, the Search bar was a simple pill shape featuring the Google “G” logo on one end, with the custom shortcut, voice input, and Google Lens buttons on the opposite end. However, the new design captures attention by encapsulating the Search bar within a more prominent elongated pill shape. While the “G” logo remains, the custom shortcut has been shifted alongside the bar as a standalone button, simplifying its visibility and selection.

To configure the custom shortcut, users can highlight the Search bar widget and click the pencil icon. They will then be prompted to enable the shortcut and choose from options like Translate, Song Search, Weather, and more. Although earlier reports hinted at a multi-shortcut feature that would provide a pop-up menu for various tools, this has not yet been integrated in the current rollout.

It’s worth noting that the updated Search bar has altered dimensions, shifting from a 3×1 size to 4×1. This change may disrupt the layout of app icons on a user’s home screen, especially for those who highly value aesthetic organization. Overall, it’s encouraging to see Google striving for improvements and personalized experiences.

The anticipated multi-shortcut option would enhance the Search bar’s functionality, providing users with broader choices at their fingertips.
