Google Play Enhances Download Progress Tracking with New Features (APK Teardown)

Google Play is enhancing the way users track download progress with a new notification system. This upgrade is designed to provide a clearer view of recently downloaded apps and games.

The notification will showcase up to three applications, displaying their names and icons, a circular progress bar, the package size, the percentage of the download completed, and a button to open the app immediately after installation. Last year, Google began testing a new Download Manager for the Play Store, allowing users to monitor their downloads more efficiently.

This feature has already rolled out to many users, simplifying the process of checking download statuses and accessing apps once they are installed. Now, Google is extending this functionality to the download notifications that appear in the notification shade when new apps and games are downloaded.

Recent APK teardown activities have revealed this upgraded notification system in the latest Google Play Store build (version 46.1.37-31), although it is not yet available to all users. The new notification format includes an app icon surrounded by a circular progress bar.

In addition, it lists the app’s name, package size, download percentage, and an open button for immediate access post-download. The notification can feature a maximum of three apps, including those that have already been installed.

There is also a “See more” option that may lead users to the Download Manager in the Play Store, though this has not been confirmed as this feature is currently non-functional. Additionally, some elements of the notification, like the “Open” button and the incorrect download statistics at times, suggest that the feature may not be fully polished yet.

Further information from Google regarding this new notification system is anticipated as its release date approaches.
