Google Messages is finally addressing one of its long-standing complaints by allowing users to customize group chat icons. This new feature, currently in testing, will enable users to replace the default grid of initials or profile pictures with their chosen icons, making it easier to distinguish between different group chats. Until now, the Google Messages app has limited users to a grid that displays the initials of up to four participants, making it somewhat difficult to differentiate between various group conversations. However, recent findings indicated that Google was working on a way to enhance this aspect of the app.
As of now, some users are beginning to experience the rollout of this customization option. Initial reports suggest that users can upload their own images for RCS group chats. A screenshot shared on Reddit shows a pencil icon next to the group chat icon on the Group details page, indicating the option to select a new image. However, it is worth noting that GIFs are not supported, and once a new icon is set, reverting to the original grid appears to be impossible.
Currently, this feature seems to be available only in the Google Messages beta version, with a limited rollout to a select group of users. If it becomes widely available in the stable version of the app, it will significantly enhance the user experience by making it simpler to tell one group chat from another. This enhancement would also bring Google Messages in line with other popular messaging applications like WhatsApp, which already offer similar features. Overall, this development is a welcome change for users who have been seeking more personalization options in their messaging experience.
