Google Messages is reportedly rolling out a new “Delete for Everyone” feature for group chats among beta users. This eagerly anticipated option enables users to remove messages sent in group conversations, suggesting that a broader release might be imminent. However, it remains uncertain whether this feature will also extend to individual chats within Google Messages.
The new deletion option, uncovered in a previous APK teardown, is part of the improvements associated with Rich Communication Services (RCS) based on the RCS Universal Profile v2.7 announced in June 2024. Users will have two options: “Delete for everyone,” which deletes the message from all receivers, and “Delete for me,” which only removes the message from the sender’s device. Reports indicate that at least some users in the beta phase have already seen these features in action within their large group chats.
A Reddit user shared that they were able to use the feature in a group of 12, while other group chats did not support it, nor could they find any individual conversations that allowed message deletion. This indicates that Google may be testing the feature’s capability selectively, possibly based on group size or user type. Additionally, an investigation into the app suggests that Google Messages may notify other participants when a message has been deleted, a detail that could raise privacy concerns among users.
While there has been no official word from Google regarding a worldwide rollout timeline, the current beta activity hints that the full feature may not be far off.
