In a recent interview, Carl Pei, the CEO of Nothing, predicted a significant shift in smartphone technology, suggesting that future devices may operate with just one app: the operating system (OS). Pei envisions a future where traditional apps become obsolete, replaced by a more advanced OS capable of understanding context and acting autonomously for the user.
Pei believes that in the coming years, smartphones will streamline their functionality to consist solely of the OS, which would be tailored to understand the unique needs and preferences of individual users. He states, “The OS will know its user well and will be optimized for that person.” This intelligent system would not only provide relevant information but would also eliminate the need to manually navigate multiple applications.
As Nothing prepares to launch its new flagship device, the Nothing Phone 3, Pei reflects on the company’s growth, which saw a significant 150% increase last year, despite holding only 0.1% of the global smartphone market. Nothing has distinguished itself by challenging conventional smartphone design, placing an emphasis on clarity, simplicity, and innovation.
Pei’s vision extends beyond the visual aspects of smartphones. He imagines a future where devices can intelligently comprehend user context—whether it’s location, time, or upcoming schedule—and offer timely suggestions or act proactively.
He notes, “The next step after data-driven personalization is automation,” emphasizing the role of integrated AI in achieving this goal. However, Pei acknowledges that such a radical change won’t occur overnight.
He realistically explains that a full transition to an app-free experience may take seven to ten years, as consumer habits and attachments to apps won’t dissolve easily. For now, Pei sees this evolution as a gradual process, relying on ongoing testing and user feedback to shape the future of smartphones.
